I received an email from Susan Henderson with Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund. Doing Disability Justice. I asked Susan if I could share the email on the Writing with Disability blog and she gave me permission.
NOTE: I, personally, do not have a problem with the President or with Congress – and I’m sure things will work out for the best over time as my faith is in a higher power than these. We have had large disagreements like this one in the past but no social media presence and the news presence filling social media wasn’t there during those situations.
I do believe in Disability Rights, Medicare, Medicaid, Senior Rights, and assistance and advocacy for people with disabilities. We must preserve health care and Medicaid. If it goes away, my elder intellectually disabled sister, who lives with me may lose her benefits. My husband and I would absorb costs we cannot afford. I am also disabled and my medical expenses are numerous.

Preserve Health Care and Medicaid for
People with Disabilities & Seniors
The President and Congress are moving quickly to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and major cuts to and restructuring of Medicaid and Medicare may not be far behind. We must let policymakers know that these changes will harm seniors and people with disabilities and may force some into institutions.
Take Action This Week: Add your voice to ensure that Congress here’s from millions of us this week. Call your Member of Congress on Tuesday, January 31 and Wednesday, February 1!
Here’s how: On Tuesday and Wednesday, call 866–426–2631
You will hear a brief overview of the issues and will be asked to enter your zip code before being transferred to your members of Congress.
Here are talking points you can use for your calls:
* No repeal of the ACA without simultaneous improved or equivalent replacement
If Congress votes to repeal the ACA, a replacement package that provides equivalent or improved access to affordable, quality health coverage must be included in the same legislation.
* No cuts to and restructuring of Medicaid
Seniors and people with disabilities rely on Medicaid for both health care and long-term services and supports so they can live in their own homes in the community. Program cuts, along with block grant or per capita cap proposals would hurt people who have no alternative means of paying for essential services.
* Preserve Medicare for current and future seniors and people with disabilities
Medicare is a huge success story, with strong support from all Americans. Premium support and other restructuring proposals to shift more costs onto beneficiaries would make health care far less affordable and accessible to seniors and people with disabilities.
